How Can I Get Free Loft Insulation With GBIS?

23 August 2023 | Grants & Schemes
Right now there is an opportunity to make your property more comfortable as well as more environmentally friendly, without spending a fortune. GBIS is one of the quickest, most accessible government insulation schemes to date.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) run by the British government has made it possible for us to save both money and energy by making loft insulation available free of charge. GBIS (The Great British Insulation Scheme) offers free loft insulation grants to households who meet certain criteria.

You could save more than £300 a year on your utility bills by participating in the Great British Insulation Scheme. Continue reading to find out more information about this beneficial programme and how you can benefit from it right away.

Who is the Great British Insulation Scheme for?

Insulation is the method that the government has identified as having the potential to bring about the greatest number of improvements in the shortest amount of time, at the lowest cost.

The aim is to improve the lives of over 300,000 households.

The Great British Insulation Scheme is aimed at a “general eligibility group.” These are essentially the homes with the poorest energy efficiency and include those that fall into the lower council tax categories.

Am I eligible for the government’s Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS?)

There are only two conditions that need to be met in order to qualify for grant funding from the Great British Insulation Scheme:

Your home needs to have a rating of D-G on its Energy Performance Certificate (also known as an EPC.)

You must be in English council tax bands A-D, Scottish tax bands A-E or Welsh council tax bands A-E.

Energy-efficient loft insulation explained

Investing in loft insulation is a straightforward and cost-efficient way to keep your house at a pleasant temperature and your monthly energy bills down throughout the year.

Because heat rises, approximately one quarter of the heat produced in an uninsulated home is lost through the roof. If your house does not have insulation, consider loft insulation measures to reduce heat loss and enjoy enhanced energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, lower bills and a healthier, more comfortable home.

Where does funding for the Great British Insulation Scheme come from?

Energy companies are now implementing energy-saving measures, now that the government’s investment of £1 billion has been pledged towards GBIS.

Free loft insulation grants are just one of the home improvements that energy providers will pay for. It is up to the energy provider or their designated installer to determine which upgrades will be most beneficial to you and how much GBIS funding should be used towards improving the energy efficiency of your home.

What other energy efficiency measures does GBIS cover?

Energy efficiency measures installed under the Great British Insulation Scheme may include one or a combination of the following if you are eligible.

Cavity wall insulation

External insulation of solid walls

Internal insulation of solid walls

Loft insulation

Insulating a pitched roof

Insulation for low-sloped roofs

Floor insulation

Room in roof insulation
