In the UK, solar panelling has never been more popular and now, government solar panel funding is offering opportunities for more homeowners to increase energy efficiency by installing solar panels, making major savings in the long run. There are still some doubts about how they work; here’s everything you need to know about solar panels.
Why are households switching to solar panels?
The growing demand for solar panels can be seen over the entirety of the United Kingdom.
Solar panels have already been placed in over 970,000 homes, providing an answer to the question, are solar panels worth it for homeowners who want to see a return on their money.
Contrary to common beliefs, you don’t need a south-facing roof, either!
There is still an element of stigma among UK residents about solar panels, their effectiveness, cost and ultimately, how they work. Residential Energy Services are a trusted energy advisor on all energy-efficient measures including those covered in the ECO4 scheme.
It is important to read up on energy efficiency measures you’re interested in before investing; better yet, it’s worth checking your eligibility to see if you can secure funding towards free home energy efficiency upgrades like solar panels.
Solar Panel Grants – The ECO4 scheme
In April 2022, the government began implementing ECO4, the fourth stage of the Energy Company Obligation. Those who are receiving qualifying benefits can submit an application for whole-house retrofit support, to be financed by their energy suppliers.
Solar panels are included in the list of recommended measures for ECO4-eligible residents.
How do solar panels work?
Solar panels use photovoltaics (PV) to convert the Sun’s natural energy into electricity for your home.
PV systems are a grouping of panels to be placed in a location where they are exposed to plenty of sunshine. Each individual panel is capable of producing approximately 355W of power. Typically, a system of 12 to 15 panels produces direct current (DC) electricity which is then converted via an inverter into alternating current (AC) electricity, which we use at home for heating and electrical appliances.
Any remaining DC electricity that is not needed can be returned back to the grid and can potentially generate even more savings.
This is why solar panels are making homes more self-sufficient, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and financially sensible.
…But solar panels only work when it’s sunny
This is a common misconception. Sunlight still gets into the atmosphere, even on cloudy days, snowy days and even rainy days. Solar panels are actively doing their job in all weather conditions. Also keep in mind that connecting solar panels to battery storage means electricity is always available to be drawn upon, even when conditions are not optimal.
In fact, the next time there is a power cut on your street, remember that with solar panelling, your stored electricity will keep your house running; you may not even notice a power cut has happened!
…But solar panels can’t handle extreme weather
Solar panels have been employed around the world to generate energy, even in tropical climates where extreme weather conditions are the norm. If installed properly, a PV system can operate efficiently through wind, snow, hail, rain and everything in between. …But solar panels need constant maintenance
A properly installed solar panelling system should only need a yearly check to look for any potential issues. A general cleaning may be necessary to clear away excess dirt, dust or leaves, to maintain the efficiency of each panel’s surface area.
…But solar panels are too expensive
It seems like only a short time ago when solar panels were a highly affluent, expensive luxury. In 2023, the truth of the matter is very different. They are affordable and they are becoming more affordable every year. According to the Telegraph, installing solar panels will have the shortest payoff period on record.
Thanks to the latest phase of the Energy Company Obligation, thousands more homes are going to receive solar panelling free of charge, starting this year. Residential Energy Services are already talking to homes nationwide about securing ECO4 support and arranging the installation of energy and money-saving solar panelling.
