Is Your Home Making You Sick?
The Hidden Health Risks of Poor Insulation

 18 March 2025 | Energy Advice

One key element that contributes to a comfortable living space is insulation. Insulation helps to keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer. It can also save you money on energy bills. However, if your home doesn’t have good insulation, it may lead to bigger problems, including serious health issues. Poor insulation can result in dampness and mould, which can seriously affect your health. Let’s take a closer look at how insulation works and explore the risks of poor insulation in your home.

What Does Insulation Do to Keep My Home Safe?

Insulation is like a warm blanket for your house. It helps keep the heat inside during the cold months and keeps the heat out in the summer. By doing this, it helps keep your home at a steady, comfortable temperature. Good insulation also helps reduce cold spots, where moisture can settle. When moisture collects, it can become a breeding ground for mould. Without proper insulation, your home can feel chilly, and dampness can cause health concerns.

The Unhealthy Signs of Poor Insulation

It’s important to know how to spot poor insulation in your home. Here are some signs to look for:

Cold spots

If certain areas of your home feel much colder than others, that could be a sign.

High energy bills

If your heating or cooling costs are rising, it may mean your insulation isn’t doing its job properly.

Damp patches or mould

If you see wet spots on your walls or ceilings, this is a sign that moisture is present, which can lead to mould.

Condensation

If you notice water droplets on windows or walls, it means there’s too much humidity trapped inside.

Common Illnesses Caused or Worsened by Poor Insulation

Poor insulation and the dampness it creates can lead to serious health problems. These can include:

Allergies

Mould can cause allergic reactions, leading to itchy eyes, a runny nose, or skin rashes.

Breathing problems

For those who have asthma or other lung issues, mould can make it harder to breathe, causing wheezing or coughing.

Infections

Living in a damp home can weaken your immune system, making you more likely to get sick.

Condensation

If you notice water droplets on windows or walls, it means there’s too much humidity trapped inside.

It’s important to address these risks to keep you and your loved ones healthy.

Awaab’s Law

The heartbreaking story of Awaab Ishak, a two-year-old boy who lost his life due to exposure to mould, has led to new laws to protect tenants. Awaab’s Law requires landlords to quickly act on health hazards like mould and dampness in their homes.

The law states that landlords must check and fix any health issues reported by tenants. This means that if you tell your landlord about a problem, they must take it seriously and act quickly to make your home safe.

I’m a Social Housing Tenant: What Can I Do?

If you live in social housing and are worried about your home’s insulation and safety, here’s a simple checklist of questions to ask your landlord:

“What type of insulation do we have?” Knowing this can help you understand any potential problems.
“How often is the insulation checked?” Regular checks can help catch issues early.
“What ventilation measures are in place?” Good air circulation can help keep moisture down.
“How quickly will health issues be fixed?” Be sure to ask about the response time for repairs.
“What resources can you provide for us?” Your landlord should be able to offer help with insulation and damp problems.

By asking these questions, you can better understand your living conditions and encourage your landlord to act.

If you’re worried about the insulation in your home, it’s important to reach out for help. Talking to a RES advisor can provide you with support and guidance. We’re here to assist you in understanding your situation and improving the safety of your home.
