How Energy Debt Impacts Health and Homes

14 June 2024 | Energy Advice

Energy debt is an ongoing crisis that impacts millions across the UK. Recent studies have demonstrated the effect it’s having on our mental and physical health, particularly among individuals with long-term illnesses or disabilities.

Let’s explore the effects of energy debt, the specific challenges faced by households with long-term illnesses, and how support through ECO Flex and Residential Energy Services can help. Using RES’s quick and easy eligibility checker, immediate assistance is within reach for those in need.

The Effect of Energy Debt in the UK

Energy debt is a significant issue that creates more than just financial strain; it deeply affects the mental and physical health of individuals.

According to the Warm This Winter campaign, two-thirds (67%) of people in energy debt experience emotional distress as a direct result of their financial struggles. Alarmingly, two-fifths (42%) have been compelled to eat fewer hot meals to save on energy costs.

These findings paint a clear picture of the daily compromises made by those facing energy debt, leading to worsening health conditions and heightened stress.

There are a variety of ways fuel poverty can push households into a cycle of mental and physical health issues:

Insufficient heating can lead to respiratory issues

Stress and anxiety linked to financial difficulties can worsen mental health conditions

The lack of a comfortable home environment can also contribute to poor sleep quality

The Effects of Energy Debt on Households with Long-term Illness

For households with long-term illnesses or disabilities, the impact of energy debt is even more severe. Worryingly, 21% of those with a disability or long-term illness have resorted to illegal money lenders; the desperation to cover basic utility costs drives many into dangerous financial circumstances. Additionally, 74% of those with disabilities or long-term illnesses in energy debt report emotional distress, significantly higher than the general population in energy debt (67%).

52% of this vulnerable group have cut back on hot meals. Proper nutrition is crucial for maintaining health, especially for those with existing medical conditions. The inability to afford hot meals can exacerbate health problems, leading to a deterioration in physical health and a potential increase in medical expenses.

Where to Get Energy Support if You Have a Long-term Illness

Support is available for those struggling with energy debt, particularly including the ECO Flex program.

The ECO Flex Scheme provides assistance to those who do not qualify for traditional ECO 4 benefits but are still living in low-income households and experiencing fuel poverty.

For individuals with qualifying illnesses such as heart disease, lung disease, reduced mobility, or immune disorders, this route offers another avenue for support. Applicants must provide a letter from an NHS healthcare worker, signed by a GP. (Other required documents include a council flex application with a wet signature, NHS referral forms, proof of property ownership or tenancy agreements, and an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC.)

Energy debt is a pressing issue that has major effects on physical and mental health, especially for those with long-term illnesses. However, support is available. Residential Energy Services (RES) offers comprehensive support, tailored to help vulnerable households make their way out of energy debt. By using RES’s fast online eligibility checker, you can quickly determine your eligibility for support and start your journey towards a healthier, more stable home environment.
