How To Make a Difference Today and Beyond Fuel Poverty Day

 26 November 2024 | Fuel Poverty Day

As we acknowledge Fuel Poverty Day, it is essential to understand the struggles faced by many in our communities. With the price cap on energy increasing recently by 10%, the urgency of addressing this matter has never been greater. According to a recent survey conducted by National Energy Action and YouGov, 46% of adults in Great Britain are likely to ration their energy use this winter. This alarming number reinforces the reality that many households are grappling with rising energy bills—6 million UK households are expected to be in fuel poverty as of now.

Fuel Poverty Day is not just a reminder of the ongoing energy crisis; it is a call to action. With 27% of adults in Great Britain having reported difficulties in paying their energy bills over the past year, and some even resorting to rationing necessary medical equipment, it’s clear that the impact of fuel poverty is very real.

How RES is Addressing the Problem of Fuel Poverty

Recognising the urgent need for action, RES has developed initiatives to support individuals and families in overcoming fuel poverty. Over the past year, our organisation has reached over 7,000 people, providing tailored advice on reducing energy consumption and expenses. Here are five key examples of how RES is making a significant difference in the community:

Warmer Homes Project

This initiative aims to deliver mobile energy advice to underserved areas, ensuring that those most in need receive actionable and practical support right where they live.

Workplace Energy Advice

Through fully funded workshops, we offer energy advice and support to workforces across the region, improving accessibility to impartial energy solutions and further engaging the community in energy efficiency practices.

Online Resources and Education

We provide residents with clear and straightforward educational materials that empower them to make informed decisions about energy efficiency and retrofitting, promoting long-term savings.

Online Eligibility Checker

Our user-friendly online eligibility checker allows individuals to assess their qualification for various support services, ensuring they can identify and access available assistance easily.

Multilingual Online Chat Support 24/7

We offer access to multilingual chat support, allowing residents to seek help in the language they are most comfortable with, at any time of day.

How to Tackle Fuel Poverty in Your Community

Everyone can play a role in combating fuel poverty. Here are several steps you can take to support yourself and your community:

Monitor Energy Usage

Keep a close eye on your energy consumption to identify areas where you can cut back and save money.

Track and Manage Your Finances

Develop a budget that accounts for your energy bills, ensuring you prioritise essential expenses.

Check your EPC

Understanding your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) can help you identify potential upgrades to improve your home’s energy efficiency.

Discuss Energy Costs with Friends and Family

Have open conversations about energy costs, exploring collective solutions and sharing advice on how to manage expenses effectively.

If you’re seeking support with energy costs, check your eligibility for assistance using our helpful online checker. It’s a straightforward way to determine what help you can receive.

The fight against fuel poverty is a community effort. As we observe Fuel Poverty Day, let’s reflect on the steps we can take today and in the coming days to support ourselves and those in need.
