As we have seen in recent years, energy pricing has never been more talked about, making energy efficiency more important than it’s ever been.
Ofgem has confirmed the price cap for October is £1,755 for a typical household. That’s lower than the 2022 peak, but still well above pre-2021 levels, which keeps pressure on monthly budgets.
At the same time, the UK’s efforts to reach net zero by 2050 is reshaping how we power and heat our homes. Multiple government schemes have surfaced in recent years, like the Great British Insulation Scheme (running to March 2026) and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (grants up to £7,500 for heat pumps, open until December 2027). There’s also a Warm Homes Plan in the works to upgrade five million homes.
All of this points to one thing: making homes more efficient is central to cutting carbon and cutting costs. But how do we put that into practice at home?

Five ways energy efficiency matters (and helps you live better)
Learn your home’s story
Every property has its quirks. Age, wall type (solid vs cavity), roof, windows and ventilation all affect comfort and running costs. Understanding the build helps you prioritise the right fixes; often starting with draught-proofing and insulation before bigger investments. If you’re unsure where to begin, we can help you understand your home like a pro.
Use your EPC as a roadmap
Your Energy Performance Certificate translates your home’s energy efficiency ratings (A–G) and highlights where it’s underperforming (think loft insulation, glazing, heating controls or hot-water efficiency.) Treat it as a to-do list for how to improve energy efficiency, room by room.
Check your appliances and cooking habits
Old boilers and tired appliances can quietly drain money. Small switches add up: for smaller portions, an air fryer is often cheaper to run than an oven because it’s quicker to heat and uses less energy, handy on busy weeknights (but keep the oven for big batch cooking.)
Protect health and wellbeing
Yes, energy efficiency is healthy! Efficient homes are usually warmer, drier and better ventilated, reducing damp, mould and condensation. That’s more than a comfort issue: government health guidance links damp and mould to allergens, asthma and other risks, particularly for older or vulnerable people. Fixing the building fabric and ventilation tackles the causes, not just the symptoms.
Upgrade your money management
Smart meters, apps and simple devices like automatic timers and smart radiator valves give you 24/7 visibility and control. Smart meters support accurate billing and help you spot waste. Your energy supplier can supply you with a smart meter if you don’t already have one; otherwise just talk to RES.
So… why is energy efficiency important?
Energy efficient living protects you from price shocks, makes your home healthier and supports the UK’s journey to net zero. It’s also one of the few areas where you can act today and really feel the difference; lower bills, fewer cold spots, less condensation, all while doing your bit for the climate.
