The Winter Fuel Payment is available again this year for most pensioners in England and Wales
If you qualify, you will receive it automatically; no extra forms needed
If you don’t automatically qualify but think you might, check your eligibility for Pension Credit or contact us for advice
The government has made a major change to help more pensioners with their energy bills. Here’s what’s just been announced and what we know so far about how it will affect your eligibility for Winter Fuel payments this year.
What’s happening with Winter Fuel Payment Support?
After a lot of public speculation, the government has decided to restore the Winter Fuel Payment to over 75% of pensioners in England and Wales. This means that millions of elderly and vulnerable people will once again receive financial help to pay for heating during the cold months.
Previously, only pensioners claiming pension credit (a means-tested benefit) received this support. But now, if you are a pensioner in England or Wales with an annual income of £35,000 or less, you will get the payment automatically this winter with no extra paperwork needed.

How much support will I get?
The Winter Fuel Payment can be up to £300 this year. For many pensioners, this additional money can make a big difference, helping to cover higher energy costs and keeping the home warm and comfortable.
Do I need to do anything?
If you’re in England or Wales and have an income of £35,000 or less, you will likely get the payment automatically. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, different rules apply, so it’s best to check with local authorities or benefits advice services.
