It’s the time of year we don’t always look forward to, but it’s important to understand the changes. From 1st October to 31st December, Ofgem’s energy price cap rises to £1,755 a year (for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit), which amounts to about £35 more a year (roughly £2.93 a month.)
What the price cap actually is (and isn’t)
The price cap is a limit on what suppliers can charge per unit of energy and on the daily standing charge if you’re on a standard variable (default) tariff. It doesn’t cap your total bill; that still depends on how much energy you use, where you live and how you pay.
Ofgem reviews the cap every three months, adjusting it for things like wholesale prices, network costs and policy schemes. Again, it’s not a cap on the total bill, your energy usage will always be the largest factor in deciding how much you pay.

What this means for you
For many families, the change looks relatively small on paper, but it arrives just as heating requirements tend to pick up. You may notice a slightly higher monthly Direct Debit than normal. Standing charges can change quite a bit, so even homes who curb their energy use can still feel a bit of a squeeze.
Different payment methods can have an effect, too, for example whether you pay via prepayment or a standard credit method. It can also vary by region. Checking your exact regional rates helps you budget smartly.
If your usage rises through autumn and winter, your bill can rise faster than the cap number, so the goal is to control what you can control. Understanding your bill, cutting down on waste and applying for any support you or your family may be entitled to are all ways you can overcome the effects of the price cap; RES can help with all of these.
